More to discover
in every class.

Goju-Ryu is a traditional Okinawan martial art that brings together purposeful movement, physical conditioning and breath control. Training gives you a chance to challenge your body, concentrate on the task in front of you and build skills over time.

Our practice connects three things: learning sound technique, developing it through kata, and exploring its practical applications with a partner (bunkai, renzokus and kakomis). Each gives you a different way to understand the same principles.

Build the foundations.

Stances, movement and basic techniques give you a starting point. As you practise, you work on posture, balance and coordination, developing the control that makes more complex movements possible.

Practise with attention.

Kata asks you to bring those skills together. Repetition gives you something to refine, while concentration and breath control help you stay present in your training.

Explore the application.

Partner work connects movement to purpose. Understanding what a technique is intended to do makes both your solo practice and your self-defence training more meaningful.

UNDERSTANDING THE WHY

From kata to
practical self-defence.

Kata is a structured sequence of movements that preserves karate’s techniques and principles. It gives you a way to practise and refine them, developing balance, coordination, breathing and timing.

There is more to it than remembering the sequence. A turn, a step or a change of hand position can become much easier to understand when you explore what it could achieve with a partner.

That is where bunkai comes in.

Bunkai means analysis: breaking down the movements of kata to explore their applications. We use it as a practical way to teach self-defence techniques, connecting what you practise in a form with what happens when another person is involved.

Learn what the movement is doing.

In bunkai practice, we take a movement or short sequence and work through its purpose together. We look at how positioning, balance, distance and timing affect the application, rather than simply copying its appearance.

Bring that understanding back to kata.

Partner practice gives you feedback that solo practice cannot. It helps explain why a movement matters, and that understanding gives you more to work on the next time you perform the kata.

Keep the purpose in mind.

Our approach to self-defence starts with avoiding a fight. Training is about developing the skills and judgement to protect yourself, with the aim of creating an opportunity to get away safely when the situation allows it.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB

Everyone learns.
Everyone contributes.

Kids and adults share our classes. You’ll practise alongside people at different stages of their karate journey, with chances to ask for help, offer encouragement and share what you know.

Knowledge and skill can go both ways. A younger student who knows a kata well may help an adult learn it. An experienced adult may help a child understand a technique. Being willing to learn from each other is part of the respect we practise. Learning leadership skills is also a massive benefit for kids - of all ages!

We are affiliated with the International Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Association (IMGKA) in Okinawa. Our club carries that tradition forward through committed practice and a community that supports it.

SOMETHING YOU CAN SHARE

Be part of
each other’s progress.

Training together gives parents and children an activity they can both be involved in. You’re learning, putting in the effort and discovering new things alongside one another.

You can encourage each other through the awkward first attempts, practise what you’ve learned and celebrate the moments when something finally clicks. Everyone develops at their own pace, so there is room for individual achievement as well as shared experience.

A new belt represents patience, practice and steady improvement. Sometimes, getting there together makes the moment even better.

YOUR FIRST STEP

You don’t need to
have it all figured out.

You might be curious about self-defence, hoping to get more active or looking for something to do with your family. You don’t have to arrive with a long-term goal or any previous karate experience.

Give us a call and tell us a little about who would like to train. We’ll talk through your questions, help you choose a suitable time to visit and explain what to expect.

Come ready to learn. We’ll help you take it from there.
